Three levels, three very different shelves

Chartered Accountancy preparation splits cleanly into Foundation, Intermediate and Final, and each level has its own study material, practice manuals and compilers. Students almost never need the level below once they have cleared it, which is why used CA material circulates so reliably.

Alongside the institute's study material sit publisher references and question compilers for accounting, taxation, law, costing and audit. Those are the titles worth buying used; the institute's own material is often the cheaper part of the stack to begin with.

• Foundation: accounting fundamentals, business laws, quantitative aptitude, economics.
• Intermediate: advanced accounting, corporate law, taxation, cost and management accounting, audit.
• Final: financial reporting, strategic financial management, advanced audit, direct and indirect tax.

Taxation and law: buy for the current assessment year

This is the one commerce discipline where an old edition can actively mislead you. Direct and indirect tax material is written against a specific assessment year and a specific set of rates and thresholds; corporate law material is written against the current amendments. Studying a superseded year is worse than not studying that book at all.

Accounting, costing and financial reporting standards move more slowly, and a recent previous edition is normally usable. Read the year printed on the listing and apply this split — it is the single most useful check a CA buyer can make.

Practice manuals and compilers earn their keep

CA is an exam of question practice under time pressure, and the compilers and practice manuals are the working tools rather than the theory books. A used compiler with a previous student's working shown in the margins is often more useful than a clean copy, because you can see how a passing candidate laid out an answer.

Check the photos for completeness — a compiler missing its later chapters is the most common defect in this category.

Selling after you clear a level

List as soon as your result is out, and label the level and the assessment year in the title. Taxation material in particular loses most of its value at the next year's change, so holding on to it costs you the sale.
