SSC, bank and railway preparation runs on a famously short reading list: one reasoning book, one quantitative aptitude book, one English grammar and vocabulary reference, a general-awareness compilation, and previous-year paper sets for the specific exam. Government-job exams reuse question patterns heavily. A topic-wise compilation of past papers tells you which chapters actually carry marks and how questions are phrased, which no amount of theory reading will.

These books are also the cheapest and most plentiful in the category, because every candidate finishes with several years of them.

Once you have cleared an exam or changed target, your set is worth more to someone starting out than to you. List with the exam name in the title — candidates search by exam, not by author.
