A student's guide to buying SSC books second hand

A compact list, bought once

SSC, bank and railway preparation runs on a famously short reading list: one reasoning book, one quantitative aptitude book, one English grammar and vocabulary reference, a general-awareness compilation, and previous-year paper sets for the specific exam. Most candidates buy it once and use it for a year or two.

Because the list is so standardised, a used set is very likely to be exactly what you need — the same three or four standard authors appear on nearly every candidate's shelf.

  • Reasoning: verbal and non-verbal, the least edition-sensitive book you will buy.
  • Quantitative aptitude: chapter theory plus a large practice bank.
  • English: grammar reference, vocabulary and comprehension practice.
  • Exam-specific previous-year papers for SSC CGL, CHSL, bank PO, clerk or railway grades.

Current affairs is the only thing to buy new

General-awareness and current-affairs compilations are written against a period and expire with it. Buy those for the current year; there is no saving worth a wrong answer.

Reasoning, aptitude and English references do not change in any meaningful way between printings, and previous-year paper books cannot go out of date at all. Those are the titles to buy used, and they are the bulk of the spend.

Why previous-year papers are the best buy here

Government-job exams reuse question patterns heavily. A topic-wise compilation of past papers tells you which chapters actually carry marks and how questions are phrased, which no amount of theory reading will.

These books are also the cheapest and most plentiful in the category, because every candidate finishes with several years of them.

Selling your set on to the next candidate

Once you have cleared an exam or changed target, your set is worth more to someone starting out than to you. List with the exam name in the title — candidates search by exam, not by author.

Bundled sets sell faster and keep the buyer's delivery inside one ₹100 slab per five books. Proceeds credit to your wallet and withdraw to UPI in multiples of ₹100.

Questions students ask

Does general awareness material go stale?

Current-affairs compilations do — buy those current. Reasoning, aptitude and English references do not change year to year and are excellent used buys.

Are previous-year paper books worth buying used?

They are the best value on the list. Old papers stay old papers, and they calibrate you to the exam's phrasing better than anything else.
