Second hand CBSE school books online

School books are used for exactly one academic year, which makes them the best possible thing to buy used. Parents and students list complete class-wise CBSE sets — NCERT textbooks, reference guides and sample-paper books — usually right after results.

A student's guide to buying CBSE books second hand

What a CBSE class set actually costs a family

A CBSE school set is not one book, it is eight to twelve: the NCERT textbooks, the school's chosen private-publisher books for English, computer applications and general knowledge, plus workbooks and reference guides. Bought new each year, for each child, it is one of the larger recurring household education costs in India after fees.

The books themselves are used for ten months and then sit on a shelf, which is exactly why a second-hand market makes sense. Classes 6 to 12 are all listed on this page, and school sets are the most common bundle type on the platform.

  • NCERT core textbooks for the class — the cheapest and most standardised part of the set.
  • Private-publisher books your school prescribes for English, IT and value education.
  • Reference and practice guides, especially for Classes 9 to 12.
  • Board-exam sample paper and previous-year question compilations.

Check the edition against the current syllabus

NCERT revises books periodically, and CBSE announces syllabus rationalisation and chapter changes ahead of the academic year. A book from two or three years ago may contain chapters that have since been removed, or lack ones that were added.

The reliable check takes a minute: compare the contents page in the listing photos against the chapter list your school circulated. Sellers on OldTextBooks are asked to state the edition and the class, and every listing is reviewed before going live.

Spotting a pirated copy before you buy

Pirated school books are common in the Indian market and are worth avoiding, because the failures are exactly where it hurts — grey or illegible diagrams, missing colour plates, misprinted numerals in exercises and pages bound out of order.

In the listing photos, look for crisp colour on diagram pages, a properly printed publisher imprint and price on the back cover, and even margins. A genuine used NCERT looks like a worn good book; a pirated one looks like a bad photocopy even when new.

Passing last year's set on

The best time to list a school set is the weeks before the new academic year, when parents are assembling books for the coming class. Complete class-wise sets sell fastest, and a set shares one delivery slab — ₹100 covers five books — so the buyer saves too.

Prices are suggested for you at around 25% of MRP when you list, and proceeds withdraw to UPI in multiples of ₹100.
