How to Buy Used Textbooks Online Safely in India

Updated 2026-09-07 · 7 min read

Buying a used textbook online is not the same as buying it from the shop next to your college. You can't flip through the pages before paying, so you're relying on the listing photos, the description and the platform's process to tell you the truth. This guide walks through what to actually check before you pay, how the payment and delivery process works on OldTextBooks, and what to do if a book doesn't match what was listed.

Start with the listing photos, not just the price

A low price is not the point — the right book in usable condition is. Before you check the price, open every photo on the listing. A seller who has photographed the front cover, spine, back cover and a few inside pages has usually taken the listing seriously. A listing with one blurry cover photo and nothing else is harder to trust, even if it's cheaper.

On OldTextBooks, every listing a seller submits goes to pending status first and a human reviewer checks it before it's approved and made public. That step filters out obviously fake or mismatched listings, but it can't tell you whether a 'Good' condition copy has underlining you'd personally mind — that judgement is still yours to make from the photos and description.

Match the exact edition and ISBN before you pay

This is the single most common regret buyers report with used textbooks: paying for a book that turns out to be one edition behind what their syllabus requires. Engineering and MBBS textbooks especially get revised every few years, and page numbers, question sets, and sometimes entire chapters change between editions.

Check the ISBN printed on the back cover or copyright page against what your professor or coaching institute has specified, if they've specified one. If they haven't, cross-check the edition year mentioned in the listing against your current syllabus year. When in doubt, message the seller through the platform and ask them to confirm the edition and printing year before you pay.

Understand exactly how payment works

OldTextBooks does not use a card gateway or an escrow service. Payment is UPI-only: you pay the amount shown for your order to the UPI ID or QR code provided, using your order reference as the payment note, then upload your payment screenshot and the UTR number to your order. An admin then manually verifies that the payment was received before the order moves from 'payment submitted' to 'paid'.

Because a person is checking this manually, it isn't instant. Don't panic if your order sits in 'payment submitted' for a while — check back on the order page or track it by your order reference at /track rather than paying again.

What buyer price actually includes

The price you see as a buyer is the seller's asking price plus a platform margin of 15% of the book's MRP. This margin is what funds the manual listing review, the payment verification, and running the marketplace — it isn't added on top after you've agreed a price with the seller directly.

Delivery is charged separately at ₹100 for every 5 books in your order, so ordering a few books together from one seller works out cheaper per book than ordering them one at a time.

After you pay: tracking and what to do if something's wrong

Once your payment is verified, your order moves through shipped and then completed, with the courier name, tracking number and a tracking link recorded against your order. You can check this status any time using your order reference at /track — you don't need to log in or wait for someone to email you.

If the book that arrives isn't what was described — wrong edition, undisclosed damage, missing pages that weren't shown in the photos — go to My Orders and raise a refund request with a written explanation. An admin reviews it, and approved refunds are credited to your OldTextBooks wallet, which you can use for your next purchase or withdraw once it crosses ₹100.
