Refund Policy

Last updated: 27 September 2026

This page explains exactly how refunds work on OldTextBooks.com. Please read it before you order, because our process is different from a large retailer's: every book here is a single second-hand copy sold by another student or parent, payments are made by UPI, and each refund is reviewed by a person on our team.

1. When you can raise a refund request

You can raise a refund request from the My Orders page on any order that has reached the paid, shipped or completed stage. Open the order, choose the refund option and write a short explanation of what went wrong. Please raise the request as soon as you notice a problem — the sooner you tell us, the more we can do about it.

2. What we normally approve

  • The book that arrived is not the book in the listing — a different title, a different author, or a different edition than the listing stated.
  • The condition is clearly worse than the grade on the listing (for example, a "Like new" copy arrives with heavy underlining, a broken spine or water damage).
  • Pages are missing or unreadable and this was not shown in the photos or mentioned in the description.
  • The parcel was damaged in transit.
  • The seller never dispatched the book, or the courier confirms the parcel is lost.

If our team asks for evidence, send clear pictures of the cover, copyright or edition page, packaging and the specific problem through the support channel provided with your case.

3. What we normally cannot approve

  • A change of mind after delivery, or a book you no longer need.
  • Normal used-book wear that matches the condition grade on the listing. "Good" and "Fair" copies are expected to show wear; please read our condition guide before ordering.
  • Highlighting, underlining or a previous owner's name that was visible in the listing photos or mentioned in the description.
  • An edition mismatch where the listing stated the edition correctly and it was not the edition you needed. Please check the edition and ISBN before paying.

4. How your request is reviewed

  1. You raise the request from My Orders with your written reason (and photos, where relevant).
  2. A member of our team reads the request and compares it against the original listing, its photos and the condition grade.
  3. We may ask you or the seller for more detail before deciding.
  4. We record the decision against your order, so you can see the outcome there.

We aim to review refund requests within a few working days. That is a target, not a guarantee — a request that needs information from the seller or the courier can take longer.

5. How an approved refund is paid

Approved refunds are credited to your OldTextBooks wallet. They are not sent back to the UPI app or bank account you paid from, because payments on this marketplace are made directly by UPI rather than through a card gateway that supports reversals.

Once the amount is in your wallet you can either:

  • use it towards your next order on OldTextBooks, or
  • withdraw it — the minimum withdrawal is ₹100 and withdrawals are made in multiples of ₹100, paid out by our team to the UPI ID or bank account saved in your profile after review.

We do not operate an automatic reverse pickup. If we need the book returned to the seller, we will tell you how to send it when we respond to your request.

6. Cancelling before you pay or before dispatch

An order that is still awaiting payment can simply be left unpaid — nothing is charged to you. If you have paid but the book has not been dispatched yet, raise a refund request from My Orders straight away and say that you want to cancel, so we can stop the order before it ships.

7. If your parcel arrives damaged

Where you can, open the parcel in front of the delivery person and record a short video. Keep the packaging. Then raise a refund request from My Orders and keep the photos or video available if our team requests them.

8. Effect on the seller

When a refund is approved because the listing was inaccurate, the sale is reversed and any wallet credit the seller received for that order is recovered. Sellers who repeatedly misdescribe books may have their listings removed or their account suspended.
