From CLAT to LLB to judiciary

Legal education in India runs through three distinct book markets. CLAT and other entrance preparation is a one-year affair with a standard set of legal reasoning, English and general knowledge material. The LLB or BA LLB years bring subject textbooks and bare acts. Judiciary and other post-degree preparation adds state-specific material and answer-writing practice.

All three turn over predictably, and all three are expensive new — which is why this page carries everything from CLAT primers to constitutional law treatises.

Bare acts are the one thing to buy current

Bare acts are amended, and Indian criminal and procedural law has seen substantial recent recodification. A superseded bare act is not a cheaper version of the current one — it is the wrong text, and relying on it in an exam answer or a moot is a straightforward error.

Buy bare acts and heavily amended statutes in their current printing, and buy the textbooks and commentaries used. Doctrinal textbooks on contract, torts and jurisprudence age slowly; the leading cases have not changed.

Annotated law books are often better than clean ones

Law students read with a pen. A used constitutional law textbook with case names underlined, article cross-references pencilled in the margin and a previous student's outline on the flyleaf is a genuinely more useful book than a pristine copy, provided the text is legible.

The condition grade and photographs on each listing tell you which kind of copy you are getting. If you prefer clean pages, filter towards Like new; if you want the annotations, Good copies are usually the interesting ones.

Reselling after your semester or attempt

Law textbooks hold their usefulness longer than most academic books, which means the resale market is steady rather than seasonal. Subject-wise listing with the edition stated works best, since buyers search by subject and prescribed author.
