Buying second-hand NCERT and CBSE books without getting burned

Check the edition against the current syllabus first

NCERT reprints most titles every year, but the content changes only when the syllabus is revised. Before ordering, compare the contents page in the listing photos with your school's chapter list. If the chapter names and order match, an older reprint is perfectly usable and cheaper.

Where a syllabus revision has dropped or merged chapters, buy the edition your board is examining this year — the saving is never worth studying a removed chapter.

Spot a pirated copy in the photos

Pirated school books are common in Indian resale, and the tells are visible in a decent photo: washed-out cover colours, thin paper that shows print from the reverse side, misaligned page numbers and a missing or blurry NCERT logo and price block on the back cover.

Genuine copies carry a clean price block, crisp registration marks and consistent binding. Every listing on OldTextBooks is checked before it publishes, but you should still read the photos yourself.

• Faded or off-colour cover: likely a scan-and-print copy.
• No printed MRP block on the back: treat as suspect.
• Bleed-through text and loose glue binding: pirated print run.

A simple condition grading cheat-sheet

Used-book condition language is inconsistent across sellers, so judge it yourself from the photos rather than the label.

• Like new: unmarked pages, tight spine, sharp corners.
• Good: light pencil notes or highlighting, minor cover scuffs, complete.
• Usable: heavier annotation, softened spine, all pages present and legible.
• Avoid: missing pages, water staining, detached sections.

What a fair price looks like

For school books, expect to pay around a third of MRP once the platform margin is included — meaningfully less for older reprints and more for complete class sets bought together. Buying a full class set in one order also keeps delivery to a single ₹100 slab for up to five books instead of paying per book.
