The JEE and NEET book list — and which titles to buy used

Build the core before the extras

Most aspirants over-buy. The NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks remain the backbone for both exams — NEET in particular rewards knowing them cold — and a small set of standard references covers the rest. Add specialised problem books only once the core is genuinely finished.

• Physics: NCERT, plus a concepts text and one problem book.
• Chemistry: NCERT, plus separate physical, organic and inorganic references.
• Mathematics (JEE): NCERT, plus one algebra/calculus problem series.
• Biology (NEET): NCERT line by line, plus one objective question bank.

What is worth buying second-hand

Theory-heavy references are ideal used purchases. Their content barely changes between editions, and a previous aspirant's margin notes and worked solutions often add value. NCERTs, concept texts and standard subject references all fall here.

Buy new where the paper matters: fresh mock-test series and workbooks meant to be written in, and any question bank aligned to a pattern that changed this cycle. A pre-filled workbook is worth little.

Coaching modules and printed material

Coaching institute modules are among the most searched used items in India because they are expensive and rarely sold openly. When buying them second-hand, check that the set is complete — modules are numbered, and a missing booklet usually means a missing topic — and that the batch year is recent enough to match the current pattern.

Sell your set forward when you are done

Prep material has a short personal life and a long resale life. Listing your full set the year you finish recovers a real share of what you spent, and complete sets sell faster than single books because the next aspirant wants the whole stack.
