How to sell old textbooks in India (and actually get paid)
What your used books are really worth, how to photograph them so buyers trust you, and how payouts reach your UPI.
Start by sorting what is actually sellable
Not every book on your shelf has a second buyer. In India the demand is concentrated in syllabus-linked titles: NCERT and state-board textbooks for Classes 6-12, JEE and NEET coaching modules, engineering and MBBS semester references, and CA, CS, UPSC and law prep material. These are books that thousands of students need at the same time every academic year.
Put aside anything with missing pages, water damage, or a superseded edition where the syllabus itself changed. Highlighting and light pencil notes are fine — most student buyers expect them and even value solved examples.
- Keep: complete sets, current editions, prep modules, semester references.
- Skip: torn spines, missing chapters, editions replaced by a syllabus revision.
- Bundle: multi-volume sets sell faster and share one delivery charge.
Know the price before you list
The single biggest reason used books sit unsold is optimistic pricing. On OldTextBooks the suggested seller price defaults to 25% of the printed MRP, which is the band where Indian students actually convert. A ₹800 engineering reference is listed around ₹200, and a platform margin of 15% of MRP is added on top for the buyer so the seller amount stays clean and predictable.
You can move the price up or down from the suggestion, but treat the default as the market rate rather than a floor. Books priced far above it get views and no orders.
Photograph the real copy, not a stock image
Buyers are choosing between near-identical listings, so the photos decide. Shoot in daylight against a plain surface, and take the cover, the spine, the index or contents page, and one honest close-up of the worst wear on the book. A listing that shows a scuffed corner up front gets fewer disputes than one that hides it.

Delivery, dispatch and getting paid
Delivery is charged in slabs — ₹100 per five books — so listing your books together as a set is cheaper for the buyer than five separate orders. Once an order is placed you get a notification with the order reference; pack the books in a plastic-lined wrapper, hand them over, and the order moves through Received, Shipped and Delivered states you can follow.
